Kensington Racecourse
Camps

A camp for the 1st AIF was originally established on Randwick Golf Course off Botany Street. After spending a few days there, and being flooded out in heavy rain, the camp was moved down the hill to Kensington Racecourse, in High Street and from this camp the 1st AIF marched along what was then called Randwick Road – later renamed Anzac Parade, to embark.

Kensington Racecourse became the site of training for the battalion in the country districts. According to Bean, officers were sent to meet the trains and conduct the country recruits to Kensington Racecourse, where the battalion was camped in tents.
Note Kensington Racecourse was once a pony racecourse and was used in both World Wars to house troops and horses. In the 1950s, it was acquired by the government to build Sydney’s second university, the University of New South Wales (UNSW). https://www.realestate.com.au/news/100-years-on-wwi-army-camps/
