Army Medical Corps - Room For Volunteers
The Field Ambulance Section of the New South Wales contribution to the Australian Expeditionary Force is encamped at Queen's Park, Waverley. A visit to the camp discloses how keenly this branch of the service has settled down to work. There is still room for volunteers to this section, which, when complete, will have a strength of ten officers and 244 men. Lieutenant-Colonel B. J, Newmarch, one of the senior surgeons at Sydney Hospital, is in command of the unit. He has seen active service in the Boer war.
Other well-known medical men who have accepted responsible positions in connection with the Australian Army Medical Corps are: Major R. J. Millard (Coast Hospital). Major E. S. Stokes (Water and Sewerage Board), Captain J. B. St. Vincent Welch (Neutral Bay), Captain A. Aspinall (hon. Assistant surgeon, Sydney Hospital). Captain H.R.G. Poate (assistant-surgeon, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital). Captain L Dunlop, Clinical Superintendent, Sydney Hospital) Captain W Kay and Captain Wassell (senior resident medical officer, Sydney Hospital).
Twenty percent of the men in this unit have seen active service, and the whole unit is proud of the fact that not one has ever been paraded for punishment. There have been 100 horses allotted for the service the Field Ambulance.
Queen's Park also shelters a camp of A unit of the Light Horse Field Ambulance, in command of which is Major Helsham Captains Fieschl and Ramsden are associated with Major Helsham. All told there are 59 non-commissioned officers and men in this unit which has been provided with 51 horses.
